How to prepare for the SAS Certification Exams

Preparing for a certification exam is much like preparing for a final exam at college. There is a lot of material condensed into one test. But this undertaking is done more on a personal level requiring self-motivation. This is arguably more difficult to master than the material tested. Therefore, I've put together a small guideline to start you off in hopefully a productive and fulfilling path toward certification.

  • Obtain real-life programming experience
Nothing can replace real-life learning experiences, especially when it comes to programming. If you are still in school, start your path towards certification with an internship, find one here. Also, if you don't have access to SAS, purchase SAS Learning, Edition 1.0.

  • Read the Certification Objectives
Understand what is being tested. Latest info can be found here.

  • Take a Sample Test
Find out where you are in understanding the material. You can find some mock exams here.

  • Develop a study plan
You know yourself better than anyone else and know how you learn. Look at past successes and build from there. Use a calendar or MS Project to help you plan out your studying. Some people take less time; some people need more time.

  • Implement and Stick With Your Plan
This is where the self-motivation is needed. There are some great books and materials available. Some suggestions to help you stay on course is to:
    • join/start a study group at work/school
    • make flashcards for material that you need to memorize
    • find a quiet place to study (not your desk at work!)

  • Take Mock Exams
Once you feel you know the material covered inside and out, focus on taking mock exams. I've tried to gather as many as I could and am constantly updating this section. When taking any of these, try to recreate what the exam situation will be like. This means find a place with no interruptions from kids/spouse, TV or music. The actual certification exam is computer based, so if you have a laptop get an exam from here.

  • Sign up for the exam
When you are ready, sign up. Some people will sign up first, then use the exam date as a motivation to force them to study. You can sign up here.

  • Take the Exam
Get a good night's rest before the exam. See a movie the night before to clear your mind. Be on time. Good luck!
